The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) is situated on a sprawling 285-hectare plot on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, approximately 20 kilometers from the city center. The campus, surrounded by the majestic Brahmaputra on one side and hills and vast open spaces on the others, provides an ideal setting for learning. Since its inception in 1994, IIT Guwahati has rapidly developed world-class infrastructure, equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments, to support advanced research.
IIT Guwahati has made significant strides in fulfilling the aspirations of the North East region, alongside its achievements in teaching and research. It is the only Indian institution to be ranked among the top 100 world universities under 50 years of age by Times Higher Education (THE) in 2014 and continues to excel in international rankings. In the QS World University Rankings 2024, it ranked 364 globally, with an impressive 32nd place in ‘Research Citations per Faculty.’
Domestically, IIT Guwahati consistently performs well, securing 7th place among India's top engineering institutions in the 2023 NIRF rankings. The institute also ranked 2nd in the Government of India's ‘Swachhata Ranking’ and was named the top IT developer university in the Asia-Pacific region by HackerRank in 2019. Additionally, IIT Guwahati is ranked 6th globally for Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2023.

This guide provides a clear and concise roadmap for aspiring students to follow to secure a place at IIT Guwahati
Step 1: Register and Appear for JEE Main Exam:
Candidates must first register for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and appear for the exam. This is the initial screening test for engineering aspirants in India and is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
Step 2: Qualify JEE Main and Appear for JEE Advanced Exam:
After successfully qualifying in the JEE Main exam, candidates become eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. This exam is the gateway for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), including IIT Guwahati.
Step 3: Register for JoSAA Counseling and Fill Choices:
Candidates who qualify in the JEE Advanced exam must register for the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counseling. During this process, they are required to fill in their preferences for courses and IITs or other participating institutes.
Step 4: Seat Allotment by JoSAA:
The JoSAA conducts a centralized seat allotment process based on the candidates' JEE Advanced ranks and their filled choices. Seats are allocated in multiple rounds, depending on the availability and candidates' preferences.
Step 5: Report to Allotted College and Pay Fee:
Once a seat is allotted, candidates must report to the designated college or institute within the given time frame. They must also pay the required fees to confirm their admission and complete the enrollment process.
1. Initiation and Coordination
The placement process begins with the placement team contacting companies or vice versa through email or calls. A student placement coordinator (POC) is then appointed to manage discussions and coordinate the placement activities.
2. Job Application and Profile Submission
Companies fill out a Job Application Form (JAF) for each profile they wish to recruit for. The company or POC then updates the relevant job profiles on the placement portal.
3. Verification and Scheduling
The Placement Office verifies the job details provided by the company. Following this, dates for Pre-Placement Talks (PPT) and tests are scheduled after discussions between the company and the Placement Office.
4. Job Listing and Student Applications
The Placement Office makes the job openings available online as per the schedule. Interested students can then apply through the placement portal, submitting their resumes and necessary documents.
5. Resume Shortlisting and Candidate Testing
Companies review the resumes submitted by students and shortlist candidates. The shortlisted candidates then participate in coding, aptitude, or other tests as part of the selection process.
6. Interview Scheduling and Conduct
After the testing phase, shortlisted students are eligible for interviews. The interview dates and times are finalized with approval from the Career and Counseling (CCD) office, and the interviews are conducted as per the agreed schedule.
7. Final Selection and Offer Letters
Finally, companies issue offer letters to selected candidates, detailing compensation packages, joining dates, and other pertinent information.
Placement Highlights(2023-24):
Total Placements: 712 students were successfully placed by December 6 during IIT Guwahati placements 2024.
Highest Package:
International Package: INR 2.05 Crore per annum.
Domestic Package: INR 1.20 Crore per annum.

A total of 250 companies visited the campus during the placement season.

2. Library:
The Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library is housed in a four-storied building.The library has a collection of 1,54,564 printed volumes and 2,291 subscribed current journals.It also provides access to several e-books and online and abstract databases.
3. Hostels:
IIT Guwahati has two girls' hostels and nine boys' hostels.Each hostel includes a multipurpose common room, TV room, T.T. (table tennis) room, gym, volleyball court, and badminton court.There are also reading rooms with the latest magazines and various newspapers. Each room is connected to the institute LAN.
4. Sports Complex:
The sports complex offers various facilities, including a badminton court, squash court, swimming pool, and table tennis.
5. Labs:
There are several labs available, including Computer Lab, Electrical Lab, Language Lab, Mechanical Lab, Electro-Medical and Speech Technology Lab, and Speech Signal Processing Laboratory.
